Smoked Terracotta Wave Vase
This sculptural vessel was made on the potters wheel from terracotta clay, with decorative applied coils to create a layered skirt effect on the lower portion of the body. This decorative technique is inspired by Ibo pottery of Nigeria. The soft sheen of the surface is achieved through the application of terra sigillata, followed with light burnishing. After firing in an electric kiln, this piece was fired a second time inside a sagar, containing sawdust to create the smoke marks or “fire clouds” on the surface.
This piece is fragile and is not a functional flower vase. It is porous and cannot contain water. Dimensions 3.5”x3.5”x6”
